Architectural ceramics

In 2016, Tamar Mason was commissioned by GAPP architects & urban designers to design four tile panels for a mixed-use student building on the University of Mpumalanga campus. The design is based on the fractal patterns in the leaves of the indigenous trees that flank the building. Each tile was made by hand. Antjie Newtown assisted with the manufacture of the approximately 6,500 tiles using high-fired red clay. The total area of the tiles covers 54 square meters.

In 2015, Tamar Mason was commissioned by Cohen and Garson Architects to design and construct five screens for five residential buildings at the University of Mpumalanga. The largest of the screens is 10,225 x 4,920 m. The inspiration for the design was two tiny carved wooden Ndebele pendants.  The tiles used in the screen were made from two different types of clay.
